I’ve been very fortunate to have a, let’s say, eclectic career.
Anything I’ve gotten as a writer has either been through sheer will or sheer luck. I was desperate to get going at first. I’d find writing gigs on craigslist, or ask to cover something at a local paper, or beg the bosses at my day job to let me write SOMETHING ANYTHING!
After way too much time spent scratching and scrambling, I was able to build up enough of a resume and portfolio to get proper, consistent copywriting work.
Of course at the same time… I was a curious, shameless person who often asked random people in power if they needed a writer. And that got me one-off and a lot of repeat work writing award shows, scripts, and other random bits and bobs.
And finally, there’s good ol’ it’s all about who you know. Bafflingly kind people have given me some incredible opportunities, all of which I took because YOLO.
